Background
The primary IT services in the space are running on ageing hardware and an undersized battery backup. Thanks to the explosion of "cloud" service providers, we can replace these with newer second hand systems that are both more powerful _and_ consume significantly less power.
Hypothetically, the power requirements for this hardware could go from the current total of 1300 Watts to < 300 Watts based on Hef's measurements here:
This is a potential alternative to upgrading the UPS with the added benefit of removing a kilowatt of power consumption and heat disipation in the catwalk area. To replace the UPS solution, we would add a power line conditioner to protect our investment from damage from bad power conditions, and decrease instability due to power spikes/dips.
Assuming $0.07 per KWh as the fully loaded electricity price, this migration will save roughly $600 per year in energy cost. We'll also likely be able to recover a few hundred dollars by selling the old equipment.
