What is the purpose of this vote?

I'm not sure I understand the purpose of this vote. What do you expect to be the consequences that will result if this vote passes? What consequences do you expect to see if the membership votes "NO" on this? -- Justin (talk) 09:25, 13 May 2015 (CDT)

Agree. I don't think I like the idea of voting on "non-binding resolutions." The conversation about whether or not the board should have any policy-making power should happen in the framework of clarifying what policy is, in the context of this organization, and how it's enacted. --Dbever (talk) 09:35, 13 May 2015 (CDT)

The vote is a kind of straw poll and a vote of confidence or no confidence.

If a majority votes yes, the membership is sending a message that they believe the Board did the right thing in enacting the three policies, but it requests prompt communication and member involvement if this ever needs to happen again. It also re-affirms the role of the membership in a member-run space. It would hopefully bring some closure so we can go on with our lives, hacking awesome things.

If a majority votes no, the membership sends the opposite message. It means the membership doesn't believe the Board should have written the three policies. While the Bylaws still give the Board the power to make similar policies in the future, the Board would be stupid to exercise that power because doing so goes against the explicit will of the majority of the voting membership. It also brings closure to this issue, but the membership may then want to consider amending the Bylaws to remove this as an option.

I also think there's a lot of value in publicly acknowledging *things as they are* - not completely member-run in specific areas, but mostly not top down, either. I think we need to update the stories we tell about ourselves and see the necessary structure we've implemented as a part of growth, and not a failure of the hackerspace movement. --Ekoprucki (talk) 23:30, 13 May 2015 (CDT)
